Rationale: The section of the Class “A” that states “unable to recognize hand shapes at any distance” is ambiguous. Several times students with an acuity of counts fingers at different distances have been classified as Class “A”. At the Fall 2008 athletic directors meeting a change was recommended in the wording.
The track and field coaches will vote on the recommended change. If the result of this vote is to adopt the change in wording, it will be recommended for adoption to the NCASB Spring 2009 Business meeting. If adopted by the NCASB Spring 2009 business meeting the change will be effective for the 2009-2010 NCASB track and field season.
The change if adopted will be placed in the NCASB track and field rules.
Current wording:
Class “A” Totally Blind: May possess light perception but unable to recognize hand shapes at any distance. No consideration given to visual field.
Recommended Change:
Class “A” Totally Blind: May possess light perception but “unable to count fingers at any distance.” No consideration given to visual field.
